I am currently reading the book What The CEO Wants You To Know. While reading I came across this line:
“Businesspeople have an insatiable desire to cut through to the fundamental building blocks of moneymaking. Customers, cash generation, return on invested capital, and growth. Everything about a business flows form this nucleus.”
At first I was puzzled at why the author is emphasizing this simple thing so much, but as I read further I realized how every decision a company makes boils down to these 4 key pillars.
This got me thinking. If you want to succeed in a business you set the right foot with these basics and build everything on top of it. A similar approach could be applied if you want to achieve anything in your life.
Maybe you want to learn a new skill, build a fortune 500 company, or start a new blog. They all can be very complex goals. The question then is how do you succeed, or put the best foot forward at the very least. Here is a five step framework just for that:
Step 1️⃣: Manifest something that you want to do or achieve
Like I mentioned it could be anything from learning a new skill to building a business. Figure out what you wanna achieve.
Step 2️⃣: Start small
This is synonymous to what James Clear says in his book Atomic Habits. In the beginning you have to get over the friction of getting started. The easiest way for that is to focus on the smallest action that you can take.
Step 3️⃣: Bring in people and systems
Involve people who can help you achieve your goals faster. They could be your mentors or team members. Systems can not only help you coordinate better with your team, but they can improve productivity at a personal level as well.
Step 4️⃣: Go wide and deep
Stretch your goals. Once you have a team or mentor(s), you have a pool of ideas. Through discussions you might realize what you were targeting to achieve isn’t what you really wanted in the first place (in that case you can shift your focus) or you want to achieve something much bigger. If you’re learning a new skill going wide and deep could mean learning other associated skills to add to your arsenal.
Step 5️⃣: Finish (or continue) what you’ve started
Don’t leave the battleground in between. Like Rocky Balboa would say “Go the distance”. Consistency is the key to achieving success of any kind.
Let me give you an example so you can understand the aforementioned steps better:
A dear friend of mine wants to achieve a desired fitness level. (manifested a goal)
To make things interesting she started doing dance workouts. (started small)
Gradually her friends joined her. They’ve created a WhatsApp group to coordinate better. (people and systems)
They explored other forms of workout and have laid down a day-wise chart for which workout to do. (go wide and deep)
I hope they continue and get fitter with time! (consistency)
Quote of the week
Chinese philosopher Confucius on success:
The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.
